The Ucheldre Centre regularly presents talks and readings by leading authors, often sponsored by the Literary Society. P D James, Simon Brett, and Celia Skidmore are just some of the writers who have talked about their work from the Ucheldre stage.

Literary Book launch 3 July 7pm

The Great Lie by Myrrha Stanford-Smith

Already well-known as the Director of the Ucheldre Repertory Company, Myrrha Stanford-Smith combines her love and knowledge of the theatre with her story-telling skills in her first novel, The Great Lie. An historical adventure story about Nick Talbot who runs away to join Will Kempe’s troupe of travelling players.

Myrrha reads excerpts from her book, and the Rep perform dramatized readings of scenes from some of the plays mentioned in her story.

Literary Yes Please — Poetry 6 July 7.30pm

By popular request Myrrha Stanford-Smith has been asked to put on another ‘Yes Please — Poetry’ evening.

The Ucheldre Repertory Company will present an evening of poetry, with a programme containing work by local poets, and favourites submitted by the public.

Janice Madden

Formerly of Holyhead, Janice Madden will be coming from Australia, where she now lives, especially for the launch of Enter, her latest book.

Enter tells the harrowing and heartfelt stories of those now calling Australia home. Professor Roy Chantrell will introduce Janice, and a poem will be read by Matthew Plant.

Greg Delanty

A workshop and poetry reading by Greg Delanty who was originally from Cork, but is now living and working in Vermont, USA. He has received numerous awards for his poetry, and been widely anthologised.

Afghanistan, Where God Only Comes to Weep by Siba Shakib is the book being talked about at the informal monthly get-together.

Richard Douglas Pennant

Richard Douglas Pennant divides his time between Cyprus and his Bangor home. His interests include writing, drawing, and researching industrial history. This afternoon he reads a selection of his poetry, with musical interludes.

Beryl Baigent

Born in Llay, near Wrexham, Beryl Baigent has lived in Canada for nearly 50 years. Widely published, she is a poet, essayist, reviewer, and writer of articles specializing in health issues, Celtic myth and history, and women’s spirituality.

Beryl is a regular visitor to Ucheldre, and this day-long session tackles poetry, Tai Chi, and writing.

Literary Book Launch 24 September Doors open 7pm
Readings begin 7.30pm
An opportunity to meet Phil Cope at the launch of his new book, The Dancing Pilgrimage of Water, writings on Welsh rivers, lakes and reservoirs, collected by Dewi Roberts, and illustrated with photographs by Phil Cope.

The event will be both a celebration of the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs of Wales through readings from the poems, and an exploration of Phil’s powerful images.

He has created a powerful dialogue with the written word.

Phil’s last exhibition and talk at Ucheldre was on the Holy Wells of Wales and Anglesey.
