Call Mr. Robeson
Holyhead manages to stage this powerful, highly acclaimed award-winning drama about the famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner, Paul Robeson, before its performance in Carnegie Hall, New York. An outspoken and radical critic of the establishment, he was summoned to appear before a Senate Committee on Un-American Activities where he gave the most difficult and important performance of his career. The play is a roller coaster journey through Robeson's remarkable and eventful life, and highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some of his famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol' Man River.

John Ireland's Sextet is both poetic and lyrical being music just predating the profound impact which the music of Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy subsequently would have on him. 'Fachwen' by Dafydd Bullock draws its inspiration from the idyllic location near Llanberis with its stunning views of the Snowdonian mountain range. The performers then take us from the drama of Welsh mountains to the high drama of Weber's music. Weber's Quintet demonstrates its influences from the world of opera by virtue of the high degree of virtuosity and supremely expressive melodic lines. Mozart's Horn Quintet scored for 2 violins, 2 violas and cello has moments of Mozart at his best. The Programme: Sextet (1898) - John Ireland Horn Quintet, K.407 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Clarinet Quintet in Bb major, Op. 34 - Carl Maria von Weber Quartet No. 3("Fachwen"), Op. 107 - Dafydd Bullock The Performers/Y Perfformwyr: Peryn Clement-Evans - Clarinet/Clarinét Patrick Broderick - French Horn/Corn Ffrengig Florence Cooke - Violin/Feiolin Tom Hankey - Violin/Feiolin Oliver Wilson - Viola/Fiola Heather Bills - 'Cello/Sielo
Cyfansoddwyd chwechawd delynegol John Ireland ychydig cyn i gerddoriaeth Stravinsky, Ravel a Debussy gael dylanwad mawr arno. Ysbrydoliaeth tirlun gogoneddus llecyn yn ardal Llanberis gyda’i olygfeydd syfrdanol o fynyddoedd Eryri ysgogodd Dafydd Bullock i gyfansoddi ‘Fachwen’ Yna cawn ein tywys o ddrama mynyddoedd Cymreig i ddrama fawr cerddoriaeth Weber. THE DUMB WAITER & THE LOVER by HAROLD PINTER |
Saturday 17 March7.30pm

THE DUMB WAITER & THE LOVER by HAROLD PINTER
The brilliantly entertaining European Arts Company (Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Pickwick Papers, Picture of Dorian Gray, and Chekhov's Shorts) returns with a doublebill of Harold Pinter's classic short, black-comedies. In The Dumb Waiter, two hit-men are waiting in a basement room to do a job. Strange messages keep appearing via a serving hatch. Who are they from? Why are they waiting? And who is their next victim? Comedy and menace collide seamlessly in this classic Pinter one-act play from 1960.
In The Lover, Richard and Sarah have been married for 10 years. Every morning he commutes into the City to pour over balance sheets and graphs while she shows her lover the hollyhocks. Everything is not quite as it seems as fantasy and reality converge to dizzying effect.
These two witty dramas by the Nobel prize-winner still pack the same punch as when first written. Thrillingly powerful with an air of mystery, they will keep you on the edge of your seat. A rare and welcome treat for any theatre lover!
'European Arts Company provides sheer entertainment but also an excellent opportunity for seeing high-quality live theatre' - International Herald Tribune

FFIN DANCE

Connections…
A brand new double bill from FFIN DANCE for 2012. “Athletic, contemporary dance” Resolution!
New Work Choreography: Gary Lambert Informed by experiences drawn from an extensive performance background Lambert’s focus and interest is working through the body, where the devised movement becomes an expressive and physical landscape. It initiates from an interest in the manipulation and physical articulation of the body, as a reactive response to the images, sound score and environment.
Movement is the starting point of exploration and space is explored as a laboratory to frame movement. Gary’s appetite for movement has resulted in an eclectic style with an emphasis on physical aesthetics. Through the interaction of the creative process with FFIN dancers, Gary has made a pure, non-narrative work that is highly unique and reflects his love for athletic physicality.
Five Dances Choreography: Sue Lewis Music: Jenny Jackson, played live by Platform 4 Design: Steve Denton Sheffield based composer Jenny Jackson and Welsh choreographer Sue Lewis team up to produce a dazzling piece of theatre in Five Dances. A specially commissioned score, three dancers and some swish costumes by Steve Denton, make for a great piece of entertainment.
Five Dances follows Jackson’s score closely in texture, rhythm and structure. Ffin Dance will be choreographing a brand new piece of work for the dancers of the Barton Dance and Drama Academy, which will be performed this evening.
Artistic Director Sue Lewis and composer Jenny Jackson will be giving a pre-performance talk at 7 pm on the subject of composing music for choreography.
